I repeat that which I have said below in this post again about Sen. Tuberville (R-AL) holding up DOD promotions and
potentially the NDAA (annual defense bill) as a political stunt and nothing else.
In short, Tuberville needs to be censored and expelled and
sent packing back to Alabama. No man or woman in the senate (one Senator)
should have this kind of power in our democracy.
The latest here from the WASHINGTON EXAMINER with this topic headline:
“Biden picks next Pentagon policy chief amid Tuberville hold”
President Joe Biden has selected Derek Chollet, currently a counselor to Secretary of State Antony Blinken, to be the Pentagon’s next policy chief.
He is 30-year
highly-experienced civil servant since 1993 as noted here: Served as Assistant
Secretary of Defense for International Security Affairs; Special Assistant to
the President, and Senior Director for Strategic Planning on the NSC staff.
A DOD spokesman told the Washington Examiner in
May about Chollet’s record saying in part: “Some of his key accomplishments
include providing responsive and strategic policy advice, orchestrating the
department’s security assistance to Ukraine, developing and implementing the
National Defense Strategy, and strengthening U.S. deterrence in the
Indo-Pacific and beyond.”
His nomination to become the undersecretary of defense for
policy requires Senate confirmation.
He would be replacing Colin Kahl, who stepped down earlier this month.
However, Chollet's nomination will presumably be stalled in the immediate term due to Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) still holding up more than 250 military promotions and confirmations due to his objections to the department's abortion policy. The policy permits the military to reimburse the cost of the travel expenses accrued for service members or their dependents who have to travel out-of-state for an abortion.
(I Note: This part
is Tuberville’s “Big Lie”).
While Tuberville has spoken to Secretary of Defense Austin multiple
times this month, and DOD briefed the Senate Armed Services Committee about the
policy, neither side appears any closer to budging.
Defense officials have said the hold hampers military readiness, and
unfairly affects the families of service members.
My 2 Cents: I also note from the article that the really sad part
beyond Tuberville’s lying antics and BS statements, is that Republicans in
Congress, in general, have largely supported Tuberville's position, even though
some (very few) have questioned his tactics, all the while they let him skate nevertheless.
Worst, the GOP still
praises our military and national security overall – at least according to most
Republicans in their floor speeches and flag waving campaigning and such. We
are #1 in their eyes even now, right? Ha … what a crock of BS.
Every Republican supporting Tuberville should be deeply ashamed, but are they? The evidence does not support that they are.
Holding up one or two nominations is SOP for both sides, but
sever hundreds like Tuberville is now doing. What he is doing is utter madness.
