NY
Times story and also from the BBC:
“For McConnell, Ginsburg’s Death Prompts Stark Turnabout from 2016 Stance”
Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY) said in a statement issued not long
after news of Justice Ginsburg’s death: “Americans re-elected our majority in 2016 and expanded it in 2018
because we pledged to work with President Trump and support his agenda,
particularly his outstanding appointments to the federal judiciary. Once again,
we will keep our promise. President Trump’s nominee will receive a vote on the
floor of the United States Senate.”
It was a stark turnabout from his position four years ago, when McConnell reacted to the death of Justice Antonin Scalia by declaring that a successor should await the outcome of the presidential election, and then proceeded to block President Barack Obama’s nominee, Judge Merrick Garland.
McConnell would not even allow a committee hearing for Judge Garland – and that was a full 11 months before the election but now McConnell wants to move full speed ahead 44 days before this upcoming historical election.
According to NPR, days before her death, Justice Ginsburg dictated a statement to her granddaughter, Clara Spera: “My most fervent wish is that I will not be replaced until a new president is installed.”
My 2 cents: Maybe Judge Garland, had he even had a committee hearing and full senate vote may not have been confirmed – that would have been fair and just and IAW the rules. Now like this slick almost illegal move by McConnell today.
Sadly, Republicans all over the country blame Democrats for the disruption in the country over police brutality and such, well this is earth shattering and the fall out will be nuclear.
What McConnell proposes now
is the way great nations collapse and fall and disappear – this kind of politics
is another awful step in that direction I firmly believe.
McConnell in my opinion and
stated here publicly, is a low-life scum bag SOB. Is there any hope for any
Senate Republican, who claims to be honest and loyal to the country, who will
stand up and resist this?
This is in a word is an awful,
lousy, low-down, and totally hypocritical move by McConnell. Any Republican who
votes for this stunt deserves to be booted from office as not worthy to serve
one more single day.
I ask everyone to call
their U.S. Senator whomever they are and say to them: “Please resist is blatant
underhanded awful move by McConnell. It must not stand or be allowed. Vote
against it, please.”
Thanks for stopping by.
