From
the NY Times (May 9, 2021) – one story headline:
“The Republican Party’s efforts to limit voting rights are
making inroads”
Florida and Texas became the latest states to move toward limiting voter access after November 2020 elections.
They joined GOP-backed
measures in GA, MT, and IA. Also, other states: AZ, MI, and OH are considering
their own bills with three key changes to voting laws:
Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) signed
a law that (1) restricts
absentee ballots, a popular method of voting in that state, and (2) expands
a current rule that prohibits outside groups from canvassing close to polling
places.
The Texas House of
Representatives passed a similar measure last week that would (3) greatly
empower partisan poll watchers. If Gov. Greg Abbott ((R-TX) signs the
bill, which he supports, Texas will become one of the most difficult
states in the nation in which to cast a ballot.
Without an effective legislative or legal strategy,
Democrats are applying pressure on their allies in Washington and trying to
energize supporters ahead of the 2022 midterm elections.
The sweeping new measures echo the fictional narrative from Trump and his allies that the electoral system is rigged against him.
Between the new
laws, the vilification of Representative Liz Cheney and a bizarre recount in Arizona also here (my post), it has become clear how absolute Trump’s grip on Republicans remains.
My 2 cents: My view is a simple solution – that is that the U.S. Supreme Court must immediately somehow intervene and stop these maddening voter rights infringements.
None of these new GOP bills protect and insure basic voting rights.
They instead do the exact opposite by hampering our free right to vote with their new GOP-only laws that we see now - all with one purpose: To
please Trump who cannot accept his loss in 2020 and more so out of their fear
of this wrath in 2022 and out years.
It is that plain and
simple. If these laws stand or get worse, we will be facing the worse days
since the Civil War and possibly facing a new one that ends the United States –
that is not hype – that is reality.
One thing the vast
majority of American will not tolerate is for someone, anyone, or any partisan
one-side law to infringe or take away our voting rights, otherwise the U.S. ceases to exist.
How anyone cannot see that is beyond common
sense and rational logical thinking.
