AZ 2020 "Audit": Trump Thinks It Will Void the Election & Put Him Back in Office

Updated background story on Trump’s effort to overturn his loss in the 2020 election is a cocktail of equal parts ridiculousness and menace.

The AZ “audit” now ongoing reported on here from Vox with this headline:

“What’s behind Arizona’s bizarre, haphazard, and highly partisan “audit” of the 2020 election”

No one can figure out why Republicans are shining UV lights on ballots, among other things.

Highlights from this fine article follow below:

On the one hand, a sitting president actively encouraged efforts to destroy American democracy — including an attack on the Capitol.

On the other hand, the Four Seasons Total Landscaping press conference was a thing that happened thanks to Rudy Gee.

So we probably shouldn’t be surprised that now, 5 months after Joe Biden won the 2020 election and 4 months since he was sworn in as president, that Trump loyalists in AZ are engaged in the same kind of absurdist anti-democracy move that drove the final weeks of Trump’s term in office by auditing all ballots cast in AZ’s largest county (Maricopa).

FYI: AZ Republican-controlled Senate ordered the “audit” but it does NOT have the power to overturn the 2020 election — indeed, the U.S. Constitution has no mechanism whatsoever to contest a presidential election once the winner has been sworn into office.

But the AZ GOP-run state Senate was able to  subpoena the 2.1 million ballots cast in Maricopa County, which Biden won by more than 2 percentage points in 2020. Plus, the term “audit” appears designed only to destroy the confidence in the process.

My note insert: Who will independently verify the audit and the auditors?

Who are the “auditors?” The lead company conducting the GOP’s audit is a Florida security company called “Cyber Ninjas,” which has no experience with elections. 

However, their CEO, Doug Logan, (pictured above overseeing the process), does have a history of supporting and spreading pro-Trump conspiracy theories about the 2020 election. 

After a state court ordered Cyber Ninjas to disclose how it is conducting this so-called audit, a subcontractor revealed that the process involves weighing ballots, examining them under a microscope, and examining the “thickness or feel” of individual ballots in order to identify questionable ballots that need to be examined by a “lead forensic examiner and then removed from the batch and sent for further analysis.”

My 2 cents: On that last point I note that we have some idea who that would be – but also with a very questionable and suspicious connection.

Let’s face it, up to this point this is and remains Trump’s strategy:

1. Work behind the scenes (public when needed) to get the GOP back in control of the House and Senate in the 2022 midterm elections.

2. Instruct the GOP, which he basically will have full power over if the 2022 strategy works after 2022 to: Stop everything Biden.

3. Then as that strategy takes hold, he will decide to run in 2024 on a simple platform wherein he says in ever speech: “See, I told you Biden would be a failure – now put me back in charge to continue our mission for MAGA.” (Or words to that effect).

All this amounts to one thing: Trump cannot and will not, ever, concede the election officially – he simply cannot accept losing. That after some 30 court cases he lost which includes U.S. Supreme Court cases (I think 3 or 4).

All this is Trump’s natural character, which he father taught him well and that is: “Never admit to a failure or a loss. Always blame someone or something else – but never yourself.”

Or something along those lines and that has been SOP for Trump his whole adult life. And yes, all that has been carefully documented with his many business and other failures, many court cases, fines and penalties, and tons of law suits. Those facts cannot be disputed.

Pro-Trump outlets like One America News Network (OAN) and Newsmax have constant coverage like in the words the AZ GOP chair Kelli Ward who has said: “This audit will be the first domino that will fall and then other states will look into irregularities, abnormalities, and mistakes of outright fraud.”

Trump touts the audit, claiming that Democrats are trying to stop it because he said: “It won’t be good for the Dems.”

In other words, this “audit” appears to be feeding Trump’s big lie — that is the false idea that the 2020 election results are fraudulent and the election was “rigged” (his words, not mine).

This “audit” needs very close and sustained Federal scrutiny not only by AZ government officials, but by the U.S. DOJ and possibly even to reach the U. S. Supreme Court for one last and final ruling.

All that is critical to the sustainment of our entire democracy and electoral process. We will have to wait and see about that, so stay tuned.
