All together stay in unison: A one, a two, a three –
“We are won”
Paul Krugman, Nobel Prize in
Economics and damn good opinion writer (NY
TIMES here) says in a recent piece: “Soon after the fall of the Berlin
Wall, a friend of mine — an expert on international relations — made a joke: ‘Now
that Eastern Europe is free from the alien ideology of Communism, it can return
to its true historical path — fascism.’ Even at the time, his quip had a real
edge.”
A bit more as Krugman continues (the key points I
want to emphasize): And as of 2018 it hardly seems like a joke
at all. What Freedom House calls illiberalism is on the
rise across Eastern Europe.
This includes
Poland and Hungary, both still members of the European Union, in which
democracy as we normally understand it is already dead.
In both countries the ruling parties — Law
and Justice in Poland, and Fidesz in Hungary
— have established regimes that: (1) maintain the forms of popular
elections, (2) destroyed the independence of the judiciary, (3) suppressed
freedom of the press, (4) institutionalized large-scale corruption, and (5)
effectively delegitimized dissent. The result seems
likely to be one-party rule for the foreseeable future.
And it could all too easily
happen here. There was a time, not long ago, when people used to say that our
democratic norms, our proud history of freedom, would protect us from such a
slide into tyranny. In fact, some people still say that. But believing such a
thing today requires willful blindness.
The fact is that
the Republican Party is ready, even eager, to become an American version of Law
and Justice or Fidesz, exploiting its current political power to lock
in permanent rule.
My 2 cents: The
article continues at the site and I want to emphasize these points firmly
that show the scope of the problem Krugman introduces which is in essence this
question: “What path is this GOP leading the country down?”
Those 5 points
above that Krugman emphasizes should be compared to what we see Trump has done,
or says he will do, or is trying to do. Two of those points nail it: (1) stifle
our freedom of speech except on his terms and (2) to control and limit the
Judiciary for his own benefit.
Let’s face it, America is changing (we always
change) but not for the good or a brighter tomorrow that we all say we want –
not under this messy outfit we see now charge of all branches of government.
We
must come to grips with this reality show, the one Trump loves and thrives on,
and if we are honest and open and think clearly, we all will agree that we are
on very dangerous path.
I compare it to an old grammar lesson on how to use the word “nowhere.”
When someone gloomy says: “Opportunity
is nowhere.”
I prefer to say: “Opportunity is
now here.”
Help put us back on the bright (not
dark) path to the future.
Thanks for stopping by.
