We know 'em when we see 'em ... DeVos: The worst ever
Well now, we’ve at least
closed the circle on Education Secretary Betsy DeVos and for-profit colleges report
here from Law and Crime with this historical headline:
DeVos Pulled a “Full Marie Antoinette” and Retracted Fraud rules
Against For-Profit Colleges with her
“Let them eat cake” rule
Background: She’s
gone from evading questions about whether she would regulate these fraud
machines to disbanding the team charged with investigating them. Again change in direction. She
now has flat out withdrew “the gainful employment rule,” signaling to all that
under her watchful eye” the DeVry schools; the Trump University types; and the
Corinthian Colleges – thus making them (again) free to flourish while unwitting
students and their families can simply eat cake and literally get taken to the
cleaners.
History of the so-called “gainful employment rule” – it was adopted in 2016 under the Obama administration
after several cash-cow diploma mills found themselves defending fraud lawsuits
brought by swindled students.
The rule prohibited these
businesses from using deceptive practices to entice customers to plunk down
thousands in student loan money when the corresponding “degree wasn’t worth the
expensive paper on which it was printed.”
In other words, that was exactly
like what Trump University was accused of doing before they were sued and
had to repay some $25 million that they had cheated students out of.
How did DeVos do this but more importantly, why she is
doing it? In the DeVos DOE press release she DeVos unctuously
couched her decision to eliminate oversight as “a protection for higher ed
students” saying in part: “Students deserve useful and relevant data when
making important decisions about their education post-high school. That’s why
instead of targeting schools simply by their tax status, this administration is
working to ensure students have transparent, meaningful information about all
colleges and all programs. Our new approach will aid students across all
sectors of higher education and improve accountability.”
My 2 cents based on the excellent article: What a crock of horse hockey pedaled by DeVos – but not
surprised, either. She is least qualified of any Secretary of Education ever in
American history – hands down the lousiest.
So, Harvard might also be swindling
students, with the only difference between for-profit and non-profit seems meaningless
– ergo: American consumers will be
better protected if there are no rules, and taxpayers, too?
Sounds very Trumpish to me. But the DeVos family has … now dig this
stat: During Betsy DeVos’ confirmation hearing in
January 2017, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) asked her about how much her family
had contributed to the Republican Party over the years, and she averred that an
estimate of about $200 million might be accurate wow.
And this quote from her says it all – oh
yeah she and hubby are connected to Amway – what does that
mean? FYI here:
“I know a little something about soft money, as my family is the
largest single contributor of soft money to the national Republican Party.
Occasionally a wayward reporter will try to make the charge that we are giving
this money to get something in return, or that we must be purchasing influence
in some way.”
[…]
“They are right. We do expect some things in return.”
“We expect to foster a conservative governing philosophy consisting of
limited government and respect for traditional American virtues. We expect a
return on our investment; we expect a good and honest government. Furthermore,
we expect the Republican Party to use the money to promote these policies, and
yes, to win elections.”
Thanks for stopping by.
