The Truth, the Whole Truth, and Nothing but the Truth
(The moment of truth)
Comey
is set to testify June 8 on dismissal and Trump involvement in Russian probe to
stop Flynn as reported here in part from Reuters on top of
a new report that FBI and others are digging deeper into Flynn’s Turkish connections.
Whew, boy.
This story: Trump will decide whether to invoke his presidential
powers to block former FBI Director James Comey from giving congressional
testimony at least according to White House senior adviser Kellyanne Conway.
Conway made her remarks in her interview with ABC News, saying in part:
“We'll be watching with the rest of the
world when Director Comey testifies.” Then when asked directly whether
Trump would use executive privilege to prevent Comey from speaking with
lawmakers she ended by saying: “The president
will make that decision.”
Background: Recall that Trump fired Comey early last month (May 9, 2017), and
now Comey is due to testify officially before the Senate Intelligence Committee
in both an open and closed door sessions. The hearings could add to problems
facing the president already over probes into alleged Russian meddling in last
year's election and potential collusion by his campaign.
Re this possibility: Legal experts say Trump could invoke the so-called doctrine
of “Executive Privilege” to try to stop Comey from testifying.
However, those
same experts say such a maneuver would likely draw a backlash and could be
challenged in court.
Add this to the mix: A lot of rightwing outlets are trying to make hay and
say that Comey lied on May 3, 2017 during his Senate Judiciary Committee hearing
(from NPR). However, there's more
context. Here is the full exchange from that hearing, when Comey was being
questioned by Sen. Mazie Hirono (D-HI).
HIRONO: “So if the attorney general or senior officials at
the Department of Justice opposes a specific investigation, can they halt that
FBI investigation?”
COMEY: “In theory, yes.”
HIRONO: “Has it happened?”
COMEY: “Not in my experience. Because it would be a big deal to tell the FBI
to stop doing something that — without an appropriate purpose. I mean where
oftentimes they give us opinions that “we don't see a case there and so you
ought to stop investing resources in it.” But I'm talking about a situation
where we were told to stop something for a political reason and that would be a
very big deal. It's not happened in my experience.”
Analysis of Sen. Hirono's question: She was very specific — referring to “the AG or senior
officials at the DOJ and no mention of the White House or the president.
There's been no indication that officials at the DOJ applied pressure to Comey
to stop any part of the Russia investigation.
My view: Would be the kiss for the House to act and draw up
articles of impeachment on Trump for his blatant “abuse of power and
obstruction of justice.” If the GOP did not act accordingly, re: Trump does in
fact stifle Comey’s testimony, then they would all be remiss in their duties
and therefore they should resign en masse from office as projecting disgrace to
their office and on country as whole. They profess to stand for “the rule of
law,” then let’s see it that is true if Trump moves to shut off Comey from
telling the truth. Let us, “We the People” hear and decide – we are capable of
that, even if most of the GOP is not…!!! In my view as I said.
