GOP Budget Threat: Shutdown Government if They Don't Get Their Way

I do what the House GOP base tells me to do
(I'm dead serious — Grrrrr)

It’s almost the end of another Fiscal Year (FY), and as usual, we here we go again with GOP threats of a government shutdown front and center as seen in this AP story headline:

“White House asks Congress to pass short-term funding to keep government operating”

The White House said Congress should pass a short-term funding measure to ensure the government keeps operating after the current budget year ends September 30.

An official with the OMB said lawmakers would very likely need to pass a temporary spending measure in September to prevent a potential partial shutdown.

Without such congressional approval, parts of the federal government could shut down when the new budget year begins October 1.

That would jeopardize federal programs on which millions of households rely on.

The shutdown is a risk because of disagreements on the annual spending bills to be passed by the Republican-led House and Democratic-majority Senate. Neither side wants a shutdown despite their differences.

Congressional leaders are pitching a stopgap government funding package to avoid a federal shutdown after next month.

Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) raised the idea to House Republicans on a members-only call.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) said the two leaders had spoken about such a temporary measure.

McCarthy told Fox News on Sunday (August 27) that he “Would actually like to have a short-term funding measure because a shutdown hurts the American public.” He then suggested an extension would allow the House to pass its own spending plans and improve its leverage in talks with the Senate.

Many House Republican hardcore conservatives again (as usual) insist on sharp cuts to many programs, and that reopens a tense debate about government finances from earlier this year when the White House and Congress reached a compromise in June to extend the government's legal borrowing authority through January 2025.

My 2 Cents: This GOP-run House is full of hypocrites from top to bottom.

The image of McCarthy above says it all. He is not concerned about the country – not one bit – he sounds sincere, but only in his words, not in his actions, and certainly not with any leadership on most critically important public issues.

McCarthy is only concerned about staying in the speaker’s chair and in order to do that, as we all know all too well, he needs to keep the GOP MAGA and Conservatives happy and in step.

Thus, he will bend to their every wish no matter the cost, outcome, or harm a shutdown would inflict.

Thanks for stopping by.
