May go by
the way of Nero watching everything burn down
(A spare fiddle,
anyone?)
Opinion piece from Greg
Sargent at the Washington Post (via MSN) with my notes below sprinkled
within. Sargent’s thought-provoking
introduction: “Just in case the
Democratic capture of the House of Representatives tempted you to relax for a
moment about the state of our country, President Trump quickly moved to remind
us that we still have no idea how low he’s going to sink — or how much damage he’ll
do along the way.”
The Headline:
Opinions | Trump just reminded us
that he’s still a dangerous authoritarian madman
My input about all this
in one day following the midterms:
1. The election
results was BIG NEWS
2. Sessions fired was
BIGGER NEWS
3. Sessions
replacement floating and that he (Matthew
Whitaker) could stop Mueller would be the BIGGEST NEWS (fire him or
shut off funding – but it would stop the wheels already turning.
4. Mass
shooting in CALIF – 13 at college bar dead EVEN BIGGER NEWS
5. Justice
Ginsburg falls, break ribs and is HOSPITALIZED – potentially HUGE NEWS
6. Then that
wild and crazy post-election Trump press conference he wanted questions
to be election centered and be his moment to enjoy in the spotlight as his “big
win” – but it turned into an utter fiasco
7. Now bigger news
potentially most-dangerous of all – who will replace Sessions and what would
they do about Mueller? A person close to Sessions, who spoke on the condition
of anonymity to be frank about what Matthew Whitaker
might do based on his past remarks and op-ed.
A person close to Session said that Sessions thought that by
staying in the job, he had protected the integrity of the investigation. Whitaker
would reverse that in favor of Trump. The person also said that in the long
run, Sessions was convinced that the country will be better served by the
investigation proceeding naturally, as the findings would be more credible to
the general public.
*NOTE: Whitaker has spoken and written highly
questionable comments about the Mueller investigation. Whitaker has tweeted
skeptically of the investigation, written an op-ed arguing that it had begun to
exceed its mandate, and described on CNN a scenario whereby the investigation
could be ground to “almost a halt” through “crafty” backstage maneuvers.
He
will now reportedly take charge of the Mueller probe that he views so
skeptically.
]
During an
appearance on CNN last year, he predicted that the president would attempt to
do something “a bit more stage crafty than the blunt instrument of firing the
attorney general” in an effort to obstruct the Mueller probe.
That “crafty” idea? Slashing Mueller’s budget
– he said: “I could see a scenario where Jeff Sessions is replaced, and
that [new] attorney general doesn’t fire Bob Mueller, but he just reduces his
budget so low that his investigation grinds to absolute, almost a halt.”
Such an
approach would be in line with Whitaker’s other public statements that his new
subordinate, Mueller, was overstepping his investigative authority.
In 2017, Whitaker
wrote a CNN editorial titled “Mueller’s
investigation of Trump is going too far.”
That same
year, he tweeted
a Philadelphia Inquirer column titled “Note to Trump’s lawyer: Do not cooperate
with Mueller lynch mob,” with the note: “Worth a read.”
My 2 cents: I believe precisely what we see
unfolding has been Trump’s plan all along. The final moment of truth may at the
nation’s front door – so let’s be honest: All this is part of Trump’s plan for
himself and his family Empire – make no mistake about that - not the country’s
sake – just Trump’s own. (That is proven daily).
So, the whole Mueller thing is now in question, but
keep in mind shutting down Mueller would not end it – indictments still linger,
witnesses will still have to be heard by the Mueller grand jury, and evidence
cannot be just tossed aside at Trump’s whim or personal stake.
It has long been obvious that any AG who did not place
Trump’s own interests over those of the country would have to go. Sessions
firing proves that beyond any doubt.
B/L: Trump will do anything NOT to lose
or finish behind anyone at any time about anything anywhere no matter who or
when or where. Not his style.
What see developing now will be Watergate 10 times
over – this is Trumpgate.
Thanks for stopping by.
