Army Sgt. Bowe
Bergdahl (R) - Released in a 5-Taliban Trade Deal
First and right up front the foremost to set the scene, watch this short (1-minute) review and reminder of exactly what Trump's views of Sgt. Bergdahl and the pending case are — in Trump's own words, not mine:
Now this update on the case with this NY Times headline:
Sgt. Bowe
Bergdahl Facing Desertion Trial Asks President Obama for Pardon
As for me, I hope Mr. Obama does grant the pardon and here is why I hope so:
Eugene R. Fidell, Sergeant Bergdahl’s lead defense lawyer, declined to comment
on the pardon petition.
But if the case is still pending on Inauguration Day,
January 20, 2017, Fidell says he will file
a motion to have it dismissed arguing that a fair military trial will be
impossible after Mr. Trump becomes the Commander-in-Chief (base on the remarks he has made in prejudgment of Sgt. Bergdahl - the video above is proof alone).
In that video Trump also falsely claimed
that six Americans were killed searching for Sergeant Bergdahl, and that the
five Taliban ex-detainees were back on the battlefield.
Attorney Fidell additionally complained about comments by Senator John McCain (R-AZ) who is the Senate Armed Services Committee chairman and oversees confirmation hearings for commissioned officers wherein he called Sergeant Bergdahl a deserter and vowed to hold an oversight hearing if he went unpunished.
However one looks at this case, simple logic must be applied, which is simple: The original decision to get his release conforms with and is in line with our time-tested military creed of “I Will Never Leave a Fallen Comrade.” This is no different.
Stay tuned... More later, I am sure.
